Cemetery Decorations

In order to maintain the cemetery in a manner that you can be proud of, Mount Hope has established regulations regarding the decoration of graves, mausoleum spaces, known as crypts, and columbarium spaces, known as niches, in which cremation urns are placed.

These regulations are to ensure the beauty of the cemetery and the safety of visitors and groundskeepers.

Approved Decorations

Flowers and American flags placed in cemetery approved vases are approved decorations.

All decorations except flowers and American flags placed in cemetery approved vases will be removed from graves by cemetery personnel one week after interment.

Living Memorial Program

If you are looking for a way to permanently honor your loved one, consider donating a tree to the cemetery in their honor.

We will plant maples, oaks, elms, white pines, ginkgos and lindens.

We can assist you with the location and the details. Your tree will add grace and beauty to the cemetery today, and increase in grandeur for generations to come.

Unapproved Decorations

For the safety of cemetery visitors and staff and the beauty of the cemetery, some types of decorations may not be placed at graves or in the mausoleum.

Glass or ceramic vases and jars are not permitted at any time at graves or in the mausoleum. Mechanical and electronic devices or any decorations above three feet in height are not permitted at any time. These items made it difficult and dangerous to maintain the cemetery grounds.

Planting of any kind is not permitted. Potting soil or dirt cannot be placed in bronze memorial vases. Please consider donating a tree to the cemetery in honor of your loved one through our Living Memorial Program

Removal of Decorations

All decorations except flowers and American flags placed in cemetery approved vases will be removed from graves by cemetery personnel one week after interment. Cemetery personnel will also remove unauthorized decorations and wilted flowers from graves and the mausoleum throughout the year.

Excluding flowers and American flags placed in cemetery-approved vases, all types of floral displays and personal decorations will be removed one week after the following holidays: New Year's Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Day. If you wish to keep your decoration, please remove it prior to that day.

For the Christmas holiday, decorations may be placed beginning Thanksgiving Day. As a service to you, all decorations except flowers and American flags placed in cemetery approved vases will be removed one week after Christmas.

Cemetery Clean-up Days

To beautify and maintain the cemetery, we conduct a twice-yearly all cemetery clean-up day on March 1 and November 15th (or the next business day). All cemetery decorations will be removed at this time, including items in permanent vases. Empty vases will be turned down for safety.

This allows our staff to perform appropriate maintenance on the property. If you wish to keep your decorations, please remove them by March 1 and November 15. Approved decorations can be placed again beginning on the Saturday after the clean-up day.
